ইচ্ছাকৃতভাবে নিজের জীবন নিয়ে নেয়াকে বা নিজেকে হত্যা করাকে Suicide বা আত্মহত্যা বলা হয়। উনবিংশ শতাব্দী শেষের পূর্বে বেশীর ভাগ পশ্চিমা দেশে আত্মহত্যাকে একটি অপরাধ হিসেবে আইনিভাবে সংজ্ঞায়িত করা হতো। ২০০০ সালের শুরুর দিকের সামাজিক আবহাওয়ায় আত্মহত্যাসূচক আচরণকে বহুল প্রচলিতভাবে মানসিক বা মনোবৈজ্ঞানিক জরুরি অবস্থা হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয়। আত্মহত্যা একটি প্রধান জনস্বাস্থ্য সমস্যার সাথে সাথে ব্যক্তিগত দু:খের ঘটনা হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয়।
