লক্ষ্যসমূহ অর্জনের উদ্দেশ্যে পরিকল্পনা, সংগঠণ, কর্মচারী নিয়োগ, নির্দেশনা এবং নিয়ন্ত্রণের কার্যাবলীর প্রয়োগ সম্ভাব্য সবচেয়ে দক্ষ উপায়ে করাকে Management বা ব্যবস্থাপনা বলে। “The application of planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling functions in the most efficient manner possible to accomplish objectives.”

একজন ব্যবস্থাপকের কাছ থেকে কতগুলো প্রত্যাশিত আচরণকে Management Role বা ব্যবস্থাপনামূলক ভূমিকা বলে। একজন ব্যবস্থাপকের পালনের জন্য তিনটি প্রধান ভূমিকা থাকে: আন্তঃব্যক্তিগত, তথ্যমূলক এবং সিদ্ধান্ত-গ্রহণমূলক। “A set of expected behaviors. A manager has three major roles to perform: interpersonal, informational, and decision-making.”

একজন ব্যবস্থাপকের একটি কার্য সম্পাদনের জন্য জ্ঞান, আচরণ এবং প্রবণতা ব্যবহারের ক্ষমতাকে Management Skill বা ব্যবস্থাপনামূলক দক্ষতা বলে। “The ability to use knowledge, behaviors, and aptitudes to perform a task.”- Steven J. Skinner & John M. Ivancevich

Scientific Management বা বৈজ্ঞানিক ব্যবস্থাপনা হলো কাজের বৈজ্ঞানিক অধ্যয়ন এবং কাজকে এর ক্ষুদ্রতম কারিগরী উপাদানসমূহে বিভক্তিকরণ এবং তারপর তাদের সবচেয়ে দক্ষ সমাবেশে পুনর্বিন্যাসকরণ। “The scientific study and breakdown of work into its smallest mechanical elements, and then re-arrangement into their most efficient combination.”

একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানে মানব সম্পদ অর্জনের, রাখার, বহিষ্কার করার, উন্নত করার এবং যথাযথভাবে ব্যবহার করার প্রক্রিয়াকে Human Resource Management বা মানব সম্পদ ব্যবস্থাপনা বলা হয়। “The process of acquiring, retaining, terminating, developing, and properly using the human resources in an organization.”

ভবিষ্যৎ পদগুলোর ব্যবস্থাপনা করার জন্য যে জ্ঞান, দক্ষতা এবং আচরণগুলোর প্রয়োজন সেগুলোকে উন্নত করার এবং শিক্ষা দেয়ার প্রক্রিয়াকে Management Development বা ব্যবস্থাপনা উন্নয়ন বলা হয়। “The process of developing and educating selected personnel in the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to manage in future positions.”
