Plural Nouns Commonly Misused as Singulars

নিচের noun-গুলো সব সময় plural, তাই এদের পরে সব সময় plural verb বসে। তবে অনেকেই এদের singular ভেবে এদের পরে singular verb বসিয়ে ভুল করেন।

Incorrect: His clothes is certainly expensive.

Correct: His clothes are certainly expensive.

Incorrect: The courthouse annals is not the place to look for the date of the marriage.

Correct: The courthouse annals are not the place to look for the date of the marriage.

Singular Nouns Misused as Plurals

নিচের noun-গুলো দেখতে plural হলেও অর্থগতভাবে এরা singular বিবেচিত হয় এবং এদের পরে singular verb বসে।

Incorrect: News of a series road accident are just coming in.

Correct: News of a series road accident is just coming in.

Incorrect: Molasses are being sold by 20 Taka per kg.

Correct: Molasses is being sold by 20 Taka per kg.

Incorrect: Comics are essential in a comedy.

Correct: Comics is essential in a comedy.

Exception:

Incorrect: The politics of the two friends is sharply different.

Correct: The politics of the two friends are sharply different.

Note: এখানে politics মানে political beliefs বা ’রাজনৈতিক আদর্শ’, তাই verb plural.

Incorrect: The athletics of the college is football, basketball, and baseball.

Correct: The athletics of the college are football, basketball, and baseball.

Note: এখানে athletics মানে ‘sports activities’ বা ‘বিভিন্ন রকমের ক্রীড়া’।

Non-count Nouns

কিছু noun রয়েছে যারা সবসময়ই singular. তবাদের একটা মাত্র form-ই রয়েছে সেটা হলো singular form. এই noun-গুলো হলো uncountable noun. এদের পূর্বে determiner a, an, the বসে না। এদের পরে সবসময় singular verb বসে।

Incorrect: The happiness means different things to different people.

Correct: Happiness means different things to different people.

Incorrect: Kripa learns the Japanese at Modern Language Institute.

Correct: Kripa learns Japanese at Modern Language Institute.

Incorrect: All his furniture have been sold.

Correct: All his furniture has been sold.

Incorrect: I like my tea with the milk.

Correct: I like my tea with milk.

Incorrect: Bread are expensive to buy for poor people nowadays.

Correct: Bread is expensive to buy for poor people nowadays.
