Errors in Using Pronouns

Use of Everyone and Similar Pronouns

Incorrect: Everybody accept their responsibilities.

Correct: Everybody accepts his responsibilities.

Incorrect: Nobody in that group have their reports up to date, as they should have.

Correct: Nobody in that group has his reports up to date, as they should have.

Incorrect: No one among the students want to study hard.

Correct: No one among the students wants to study hard.

Note: Everyone, everybody, someone, one, no one, somebody, nobody ইত্যাদি singular, তাই এদের পরে verb ও pronoun singular হবে।

 

Use of Either and Neither as Pronouns

Incorrect: Moon bought two books, but neither were informative.

Correct: Moon bought two books, but neither was informative.

Incorrect: Either of the boys are acceptable to do the errands.

Correct: Either of the boys is acceptable to do the errands.

Note: Either এবং neither correlative conjunction, adjective এবং pronoun হতে পারে।

Either Nisa or I am to speak next. (Correlative conjunction)

Either player may be used at halfback. (Adjective)

Neither is a very reliable substitute. (Pronoun)

Either, neither যখন pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন এদের অবশ্যই singular verb বসবে।

 

Arbitrary Use of it

Incorrect: It are the snowfalls that do the real damage.

Correct: It is the snowfalls that do the real damage.

Incorrect: It are we that helped the poor man.

Correct: It is we that helped the poor man.

Note: কোনো word বা word group-এর ওপর জোর দেয়ার জন্য যখন it-এর arbitrary use হয় তখন predicate যদি plural-ও হয় তবুও it-এর পরে verb singular হয়।

 

Use of Both, Few, Many, Several as pronouns

Incorrect: Of all the boxes, few is left.

Correct: Of all the boxes, few are left.

Incorrect: Both of the brothers is brilliant.

Correct: Both of the brothers are brilliant.

Note: যখন both, few, many, several pronoun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় তখন এদের পরে verb-এর plural form বসে।

 

Use of All, Any, None, Some as Pronouns

Incorrect: Are any of the cake left?

Correct: Is any of the cake left?

Incorrect: Is any of the boys here?

Correct: Are any of the boys here?

Incorrect: All I have left are five hundred taka.

Correct: All I have left is five hundred taka.

Note: All, any, none, some এ pronoun-গুলো যখন subject হয় তখন এদের পরবর্তী noun-এর number অনুযায়ী verb নির্ধারিত হয়।

 

Agreement of Relative Pronoun with verb

Incorrect: Aric is the one of the boys who are on time.

Correct: Aric is the one of the boys who is on time.

Note: উপরের বাক্যে who-এর antecedent হলো boys, তাই verb plural হয়েছে। আগের বাক্যটিতে one-এর আগে the বসার কারণে তা antecedent হয়েছে। আর আমরা জানি relative pronoun-এর পূর্বের antecedent অনুযায়ী verb নির্ধারিত হয়।

 

Agreement of Pronouns with Antecedents

Incorrect: Every player brought their uniform.

Correct: Every player brought his uniform.

Incorrect: Everyone was in their place when the bell rang.

Correct: Everyone was in his place when the bell rang.

Note: Antecedent-এর number, gender ও person অনুযায়ী পরবর্তী pronoun-এর number, gender ও person নির্ধারিত হয়। প্রথম উদাহরণে his-এর antecedent হলো every player আর দ্বিতীয় উদবাহরণে his-এর antecedent হলো everyone.

 

Subject Pronouns in complement Position

Incorrect: It was her whom everyone wanted to win.

Correct: It was she whom everyone wanted to win.

Incorrect: It is me who have gone there for the first time.

Correct: It is I who have gone there for the first time.

Incorrect: Is it them at the door again?

Correct: Is it they at the door again?

Note: Subject-এর ওপর জোর প্রকাশ করতে it is /it was-এর পরে pronoun-এর subjective form বসে।
