বাক্যে punctuation বা বিরাম চিহ্নের ব্যবহার অতি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এটি বাক্যের অর্থের নির্দেশক এবং নির্ধারক হিসেবে কাজ করে। কোন একটা বাক্যে বিরাম চিহ্নের তারতম্যের ভিত্তিতে অর্থের তারতম্য ঘটে থাকে।
A. Dick, the cleaner is at the door. (এখানে বক্তা Dick-কে address করে কথাটি বলছে।)
B. Dick, the cleaner, is at the door. (এখানে Dick ও cleaner একই ব্যক্তি। The cleaner হচ্ছে Dick-এর )
Apostrophe to Make Irregular Plurals
Incorrect: She grew tired of hearing his ‘whens’ and ‘wheres’.
Correct: She grew tired of hearing his ‘when’s’ and ‘where’s’.
Note: যেসব word-এর standard plural form নেই তাদের plural করতে তাদের শেষে apostrophe ‘s’ যোগ করা হয়।
Incorrect: The speaker’s ‘thems’ and ‘thats’ were quite noticeable.
Correct: The speaker’s ‘them’s’ and ‘that’s’ were quite noticeable.
Faulty Use of Apostrophe
Incorrect: That house is their’s.
Correct: That house is theirs.
Incorrect: The car behind the house is our’s.
Correct: The car behind the house is ours.
Note: Possessive pronoun-এর সাথে apostrophe (‘) যোগ করতে হয় না।
Showing Possessives in Compounds
Incorrect: This is his father’s-in-law house.
Correct: This is his father-in-law’s house.
Incorrect: It was someone’s else coat.
Correct: It was someone else’s coat.
Incorrect: The soldiers are to abide by the commander’s-in-chief order.
Correct: The soldiers are to abide by the commander-in-chief’s order.
Note: Compound noun-কে possessive করতে হলে শেষ word-এর সাথে ‘s যোগ করতে হয়।
Quotation within a Quotation
Incorrect: Mr. Arnold said, “I honestly believe “the money changers have fled the temple” today.”
Correct: Mr. Arnold said, “I honestly believe ‘the money changers have fled the temple’ today.”
Note: যদি একটি quotation-এর মধ্যে আরেকটি quotation আনা হয় তাহলে দ্বিতীয় quotaion-টি single quotation marks-এর মধ্যে রাখা হয়।
Hyphens Used with Fractions
Incorrect: Two thirds of the work has been done.
Correct: Two-thirds of the work has been done.
Note: ভগ্নাংশের হর থেকে লবকে আলাদা করে দেখানোর জন্য হাইফেন বসে।
Incorrect: I have had one third of the cake.
Correct: I have had one-third of the cake.
Hyphens Used with Numbers
Incorrect: Jim has forty one boxes in the attic.
Correct: Jim has forty-one boxes in the attic.
Note: Twenty-one থেকে ninety-nine পর্যন্ত compound number-গুলো লিখতে হাইফেন ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Errors in Punctuating Absolute Elements
Incorrect: Our day’s work done we settled down for a rest.
Correct: Our day’s work done, we settled down for a rest.
Note: Absolute element হলো তাই যা বাক্যের অন্যান্য অংশের উপর কোনো grammatical প্রভাব বিস্তার করে না এবং যা বাক্যের কোনো অপরিহার্য অঙ্গও নয়। এটি কমা (,) দ্বারা বাক্যের অন্যান্য অংশ থেকে পৃথক থাকে।
Incorrect: The sun shining brightly it was a perfect day for sailing.
Correct: The sun shining brightly, it was a perfect day for sailing.
