Elder
Elder শব্দটি noun এবং adjective হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Meaning as a noun:
একজন ব্যক্তি যিনি বয়োজ্যেষ্ঠ, বিশেষতঃ যিনি সমাজে একটি সম্মানিত স্থানে আছেন।
A person who is older, especially a person who has a respected place in society.
Examples:
- You should take advice from your elders on this matter. (তোমার বড়দের কাছ থেকে এই বিষয়ে পরামর্শ নেয়া উচিত।)
- Do you have any elders at your home?
- Please bring any of your elders with you.
- All the elders of the village will gather here.
Meaning as an adjective:
1. পরিবারের সদস্যদের মধ্যে বড়।
Older among family members.
Examples:
- My elder brother’s name is Shahab. (আমার বড় ভাইয়ের নাম শাহাব।)
- Is she your elder sister?
- The man will come with his elder son.
2. দুইজন ব্যক্তির মধ্যে বড়।
The older between two persons.
Example:
- Who is the elder of you two? (তোমাদের দুইজনের মধ্যে কে বড়?)
3. যদি দুইজন মানুষের একই নাম থাকে, সাধারণতঃ একজন বাবা এবং তার ছেলে, তবে যে বড় তার নামের পরে the elder ব্যবহৃত হয়।
If two persons have the same name, usually a father and his son then “the elder” is used after the older person’s name.
Example:
- He has come to meet Mr. Smith the elder. (সে বড় স্মিথ সাহেবের সাথে দেখা করতে এসেছেন।)
Older
Older শব্দটি একটি adjective যা old শব্দটির comparative form.
Meaning as an adjective:
আরও বয়স্ক বা আরও পুরনো।
More aged or more ancient.
Examples:
- The man is saving money to spend at his older age. (লোকটি আরও বেশী বয়সে খরচ করার জন্য টাকা সঞ্চয় করছেন।)
- This is not his car, his one is older.
- Please give me an older edition of this book.
- This is not the person whom I saw, he was older.
- This house is older than ours.
