In English grammar number refers to the singular & plural forms of verbs, nouns, pronouns, & determiners.
There are two types of number:
- Singular number- refers to only one person, place, thing or idea. (Sentence এ একটি ব্যক্তি, স্থান, জায়গা ইত্যাদি বুঝাতে Singular Number ব্যবহৃত হয়।) For example: pen, pencil and etc.
- Plural number- refers to more than one person, place, thing or idea. (Sentence এ একাধিক ব্যক্তি, স্থান, জায়গা ইত্যাদি বুঝাতে Plural Number ব্যবহৃত হয়।) For example: pens, pencils and etc.
Number Example in Sentences:
- চেয়ারটির পা গুলি ভাঙ্গা - The legs of the chair are broken.
- লোকটি চারটি ভেড়া ও আটটি ছাগল ক্রয় করেছে –The man has bought four sheep and eight goats.
- আমি দশ ডজন পেন্সিল কিনেছি –I have ten dozen of pencils. (dozens হবে না)
- সে চার জোড়া জুতা কিনে –He buys four pair of shoes. (pairs হবে না)
- আমি পাঁচ কুড়ি আম কিনেছি - I have bought five score mangoes. (scoresহবে না)
- আমি সব গুলি আসবাবপত্র বিক্রয় করেছি –I have sold all furniture. (furniture’s হবে না)
- শিক্ষক আমাকে অনেক উপদেশ দিয়েছেন –The teacher has given me much advice. (advices হবে না)
- পাঁচশত লোক সভায় উপস্থিত ছিল –Five hundred men were present in the meeting. (hundredsহবে না but hundreds of men হতে পারে)
- আম গুলির তিন চতুর্থাংশ পচা –Three fourth of the mangoes are rotten.
- পৃথিবীরতিন চতুর্থাংশ পানি - Three fourth of the earth is under water.
- বালকদের মধ্যে একজন এটি করেছে –One of the boys has done this.
N.B: One of the –এর পর Noun –টি Plural হবে। কিন্তু Verb –টি singular হবে।
