Incorrect: Alex asked my book.
Correct: Alex asked for my book. (এ্যালেক্স আমার বইটি চাইলো।)
Note: কোনো জিনিস চাওয়া অর্থে ask for ব্যবহৃত হয়। আবার প্রশ্ন করার জন্য শুধু ask ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন: Alex asked me a question. (এ্যালেক্স আমাকে একটি প্রশ্ন করলো।)
Dispose of a thing (not dispose a thing)
Incorrect: Aric will dispose his old car.
Correct: Aric will dispose of his old car. (এরিক তার পুরনো গাড়ীটি বিক্রি করবে।)
Incorrect: Jim decided to dispose his old textbooks.
Correct: Jim decided to dispose of his old textbooks. (জিম তার পুরনো পাঠ্য বইগুলো বিক্রি করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিলো।)
Note: “Dispose” শব্দটির অর্থ হলো পরিত্যাগ করা। আর “Dispose of” একটা phrasal verb যার অর্থ হলো বিক্রয় করা। অর্থাৎ বিক্রয় করা বোঝালে “Disposal”-এর পরে অবশ্যই preposition ‘of’ ব্যবহৃত হবে।
Dream of/about something (not dream a thing)
Incorrect: Sara dreams glory and riches.
Correct: Sara dreams of glory and riches. (সারা গৌরব এবং ধনের স্বপ্ন দেখে।)
Incorrect: What did you dream?
Correct: What did you dream about? (তুমি কিসের স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলে?)
Note: তবে dream শব্দটি preposition ছাড়াও ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন: I can’t dream. (আমি স্বপ্ন দেখতে পারি না।)
Explain to a person, (not explain a person)
Incorrect: Allen explained the matter me.
Correct: Allen explained the matter to me. (এ্যালেন আমার কাছে ব্যাপারটা বর্ণনা করলো।)
Note: Transitive verb ‘explain’ preposition ছাড়া indirect object গ্রহণ করতে পারে না।
Knock at the door, (not knock the door)
Incorrect: My exam is knocking the door.
Correct: My exam is knocking at the door. (আমার পরীক্ষা একেবারে দোর গোড়ায়।)
Listen to a person, (not listen a person)
Incorrect: We were listening her song.
Correct: We were listening to her song. (আমরা তার গান শুনছিলাম।)
Incorrect: Listen me what I say.
Correct: Listen to me what I say. (আমি যা বলি শোনো।)
Pay for a thing (not pay a thing)
Incorrect: How much do we have to pay the ticket.
Correct: How much do we have to pay for the ticket? (টিকেটের জন্য আমাদের কতো টাকা পরিশোধ করতে হবে?)
Point at a person/thing (not point a person/thing)
Incorrect: Jim pointed the map on the wall.
Correct: Jim pointed to/at the map on the wall. (জিম দেয়ালের মানচিত্রটির দিকে নির্দেশ করলো বা দেখালো।)
Remind a person of something (not remind a person something)
Incorrect: Sima reminded me the appointment.
Correct: Sima reminded me of the appointment. (সিমা আমাকে সাক্ষাৎ-সূচির কথা মনে করিয়ে দিলো।)
Present someone with something (not present someone something)
Incorrect: Lira presented me a wristwatch.
Correct: Lira presented me with a wristwatch. (লিরা আমাকে একটি হাত ঘড়ি উপহার দিলো।)
