Shift of Tense
Incorrect: When John saw the lights coming towards the house, he begins to get afraid.
Correct: When John saw the lights coming towards the house, he began to get afraid.
Incorrect: I should have liked to have heard Caruso song.
Correct: I should like to have heard Caruso song.
Or, I should have liked to hear Caruso song.
Note: Tense ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রে সামঞ্জস্যতা বজায় রাখা জরুরি। Tense-এর incorrect shifting হলে অর্থের ব্যত্যয় ঘটে এবং বাক্য ভুল হয়। উপরের প্রথম উদাহরণে past tense-এর সাথে past tense-এর সামবঞ্জস্যতা হয় না, তাই দুটোই past tense-এ কবরা হয়েছে। আবার ২য় উদাহরণে দুটো verb form-ই present perfect construction-এ রাখা সঠিক নয় বলে একটিকে simple present করা হয়েছে।
General Truth
Incorrect: Last week our teacher reminded us that living the upright life was a discipline.
Correct: Last week our teacher reminded us that living the upright life is a discipline.
Incorrect: The professor told us yesterday that iodine was effective in removing silver nitrate stains.
Correct: The professor told us yesterday that iodine is effective in removing silver nitrate stains.
Note: General truth হলো এমন সত্য যা অতীতে সত্য ছিলো, বর্তমানে সত্য এবং ভবিষ্যতেও সত্য থাকবে। এরূপ ক্ষেত্রে সর্বদাই present simple tense হয়।
Historical Present
Incorrect: Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest men in history.
Correct: Abraham Lincoln is one of the greatest men in history.
Incorrect: Shakespeare was one of our greatest writers.
Correct: Shakespeare is one of our greatest writers.
Note: যখন কোনো ব্যক্তি বা ঘটনা ইতিহাসে তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ হয়ে ওঠে তখন তার ক্ষেত্রে simple present tense ব্যবহার করা হয়; আর verb-এর এরূপ ব্যবহারকে historical present বলা হয়।
Confusing the Present Perfect with the Imperfect Tense
Incorrect: Did you finish the work yet?
Correct: Have you finished the work yet?
Incorrect: Did Mr. Zayed, as of this moment, complete his work?
Correct: Has Mr. Zayed, as of this moment, completed his work?
Note: অতীতে সংঘটিত কাজের ফলাফল বর্তমানে বিরাজমান এরকম ভাব প্রকাশ করতে present perfect tense ব্যবহার করা হয়, past tense ব্যবহার করা হয় না।
Split Infinitive
Incorrect: I plan to hurriedly complete the work and leave.
Correct: I plan to complete the work hurriedly and leave.
Incorrect: Dr. Jeff always likes to closely examine every report.
Correct: Dr. Jeff always likes to examine closely every report.
Note: Infinitive-এর মধ্যে অন্য কোন word আসলে তাকে split infinitive বলে। Split infinitive ব্যবহার করা সঠিক নয় কারণ তাতে পদক্রমে ভুল হয়। তবে কখনো কখনো intended meaning জ্ঞাপন করার জন্য split infinitive ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন: Visitors are asked to please park their cars away from the main building.
Split Verbs
Incorrect: If I am, as you suggest, moving illegally, I shall cease.
Correct: If, as you suggest, I am moving illegally, I shall cease.
Incorrect: Mr. Kennedy did, I feel certain, speak on that subject before.
Correct: Mr. Kennedy did speak, I feel certain, on that subject before.
Note: যদি verb দুই বা ততোধিক word দ্বারা গঠিত হয় তবাহলে তা split সটিক নয় বা verb-এর মধ্যে অন্য কোন word বা word group আনা সঠিক নয় যদি তা এড়ানো সম্ভব হয়।
Exception:
James is not planning any action.
Nancy was never cooking at the right time.
Never have I really seen him.
Errors in use of Subjunctive Mood
Incorrect: I wish I was as tall as my brother.
Correct: I wish I were as tall as my brother.
Incorrect: If Sara was here now, she would show how to cook.
Correct: If Sara were here now, she would show how to cook.
Note: অবাস্তব কামনা, শর্ত, ইচ্ছা, সন্দেহ, অনিশ্চয়তা ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করতে verb-এর subjunctive mood হয়। Subjunctive Mood-এ একটি বাক্য একের অধিক clause দ্বারা সংযোজিত হয়। এজন্য এ mood-এর এরূপ নাম হয়েছে: subjunctive= সংযোজক। আর subjunctive mood-এর অবাস্তব কামনা প্রকাশে সব person-এরই “be” verb হিসেবে were বসে।
Logical Arrangement of Verbs
Incorrect: Mira ate, dressed and washed before seven o’clock.
Correct: Mira washed, dressed, and ate before seven o’clock.
Incorrect: The car slid, careened, and crashed into the abutment.
Correct: The car careened, slid, and crashed into the abutment.
Note: বাস্তব জীবনে ঠিক যেমন করে verb-এর order পরিলক্ষিত হয় ঠিক তেমনিভাবে verb-এর বিন্যাস করতে হবে।
Curtailed Verbs
Incorrect: Aric has never expect us to stay.
Correct: Aric has never expected us to stay.
Incorrect: We were suppose to help each other.
Correct: We were supposed to help each other.
Note: ইংরেজী ভাষী দেশগুলোর অনেক স্থানে অনেকে verb-কে curtail বা ছেঁটে বা সংক্ষিপ্ত করে ব্যবহার করেন যা ব্যাকরণগতভাবে ভুল।
