The Position of Modifiers According to Length
Incorrect: Jack was disheveled, dirty and untidy.
Correct: Jack was dirty, untidy and disheveled.
Incorrect: Ms. Sara speaks meditatively, frankly and sincerely.
Correct: Ms. Sara speaks frankly, sincerely and meditatively.
Note: Modifier-গুলোর দৈর্ঘ্য অনুসারে সাজাতে হয়। অর্থাৎ ছোট থেকে বড় ক্রমানুসারে।
Sequence of Modifiers
Incorrect: The students became angered, annoyed and enraged.
Correct: The students became annoyed, angered and enraged.
Note: Modifier-গুলোর ধারাবাহিকতা অবশ্যই logical হতে হবে। এই উদাহরণে, student-রা প্রথমে বিরক্ত হলো, তারপর রাগান্বিত হলো, তারপর ক্ষিপ্ত হলো।
Modifiers of Double Negative
Incorrect: Ann didn’t speak but once.
Correct: Ann spoke but once.
Incorrect: Shafique can’t hardly speak English.
Correct: Shafique can hardly speak English.
Note: কিছু modifier এমনিতেই negative meaning প্রদান করে। তাই তারা কোনো negative word-এর modifier হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
Modifiers Written Incorrectly
Incorrect: When he was four years old, the boy’s father died.
(এই বাক্যের অর্থানুসারে, The boy’s father died at age four.)
Correct: When the boy was four years old, his father died.
Incorrect: Before he was born, Bob’s uncle decided to change his will in favor of Bob.
(এই বাক্যের অর্থ দাঁড়ায়, Bob’s uncle made his decision before being born.)
Correct: Before Bob was born, his uncle decided to change his will in Bob’s favor.)
Misplaced Modifiers
Incorrect: Rima only whispered to me.
Correct: Rima whispered only to me.
Incorrect: Jim only ate fruits and an egg for lunch.
Correct: Jim ate only fruits and an egg for lunch.
Incorrect: Last month Sima almost earned 50,000 taka.
Correct: Last month Sima earned almost 50,000 taka.
Note: Modifier যে word-কে modify করে তার ঠিক পূর্বে বসে।
Misplaced Modifying Phrase
Incorrect: Mike told me what to do with a smile.
Correct: Mike told me with a smile what to do.
Note: এখানে with a smile হলো modifying phrase যার অবস্থান পরিবর্তনের মাধ্যমে বাক্য সঠিক হয়েছে।
Dangling Modifiers
Incorrect: While dressing, the alarm clock went off.
Correct: While I was dressing, the alarm clock went off.
Note: এখানে, incorrect বাক্যে দেখুন- ‘while dressing’ phrase-টি clock-কে modify করছে। কিন্তু clock কি dressing করতে পারে? পারে না। অর্থাৎ বাক্যটি হএব এরকম- যখন কেউ পোশাক পরছিলো তখন অ্যালার্ম ঘড়িটি বন্ধ হয়ে গেল। আর dangling modifier হলো সেই modifier যা কোনো word বা phrase-এর omission-এর কারণে সঠিকভাবে কার্য সম্পাদন করতে পারেনা।
Incorrect: Walking down the road, a grocery was seen.
Correct: Walking down the road, I saw a grocery.
Or, As I walked down the road, I saw a grocery.
Squinting Modifiers
Modifier তখনই squinting হয় যখন modifier তার পূর্বের ও পরের দুটো element-কেই modify করে বলে মনে হয়। Modifier-কে এরকমভাবে ব্যবহার করা ভুল।
Incorrect: Mr. David’s habit of speaking rapidly impressed the visitor.
Correct: Mr. David’s habit of rapid speech impressed the visitor.
Or, Mr. David’s habit of speech rapidly impressed the visitor.
Verbal Modifiers
Incorrect: Flying out of the window, he grabbed the papers.
Correct: Flying out of the window, the papers were grabbed by him.
Note: এখানে, জানালার বাইরে কোন ব্যক্তি উড়ে যেতে পারে না, উড়ে যেতে পারে কাগজ। তাই modifier-এর পরে সঠিক Subject-কে বসাতে হবে।
Incorrect: Having my meal, university was gone.
Correct: Having my meal, I went to university.
Note: Verbal বা non-finite verb অনেক সময় modifier-এর কাজ করে এবং এই modifier যার সম্পর্কে প্রযোজ্য, তার পাশেই এনে বসাতে হয়। এই modifier-গুলো সাধারণতঃ বাক্যের শুরুতে কোনো phrase-এর মধ্যে কমা দ্বারা main clause থেকে পৃথক থাকে এবং কমার পরেই সেই subject-কেই বসাতে হয় যার জন্য modifier বসেছে। Subject-কে establish করতে বাক্যকে active বা passive যা করার দরকার তাই করতে হয়। Dangling modifier বা illogical participle modifier এই verbal modifier-এর অন্তর্গত।
Incorrect: Accustomed to getting up early, the new schedule was not difficult to him to adjust to.
Correct: Accustomed to getting up early, he had no difficulty adjusting to the new schedule.
Incorrect: Leaving the house, the front door was locked.
Correct: Leaving the house, I locked the front door.
Incorrect: Unable to swim, a lifeguard rescued me.
Correct: Unable to swim, I was rescued by a lifeguard.
Incorrect: To determine its value, the book will be appraised.
Correct: To determine its value, I will appraise the book.
