High &Tall

High /adjective/ (উচ্চ):

সাধারণত পাহাড় বা এমন কিছু যা মাটি থেকে অনেক উপরে, অথবা বিমূর্ত কোন কিছুর ব্যাপ্তি বোঝাতে High বসে। তবে Noun ‘height’ সব ক্ষেত্রেই বসতে পারে।

High refers being at or having a relatively great or specific elevation or upward extension. It is used for mountains and for things which are a long way above the ground. We don’t use high when we talk about people.

Example:

  • The refrigerator is five feet high. (Tall নয়)
  • Her height is six feet. (Tall নয়)
  • Do you think I'm high maintenance?
  • There are some high mountains in the north of the country.
  • The light switch is too high for a child to use.

Tall /adjective/ (লম্বা):

এমন কোনো কিছু যা পাতলা ও সরু (চওড়া নয়), তার দৈর্ঘ্য বা উচ্চতা বোঝাতে Tall বসে।

Tall refers being great in vertical dimension. We use tall to describe things which are high and thin in their shape (e.g. people, buildings, trees):

Example:

  • The lady is six fit tall. (Height নয়)
  • All the children in my family grew up to be very tall.
  • The tall trees by the river give welcome shade on hot days.
  • The drinks were served in tall glasses.
  • You know that very tall, white building just where the motorway begins – that’s where I work.
