Hard vs Hardly

Hard/ adverb/adjective / (কঠোরভাবে/ কঠিন):

Hard যদি adverb হিসেবে আসে তাহলে ভীষণভাবে বা সাংঘাতিকভাবে অর্থ বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। যদি adjective হয় তাহলে কঠিন/শক্ত অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

If hard is used as an adverb, it means "strongly" / very vividly / with a gread deal of effort. If it is used as an adjective, then it means "strong" / "solid".

Example:

  • Sabbir tried hard but failed. (Hardly নয়)
  • I can see why Alex fell so hard for you.
  • Sara was asked a lot of hard questions. (এখানে hard একটি adjective)
  • It was hard to find a replacement for her.
  • Play hard if you want to win.

Hardly/ adverb/ (কদাচিৎ):

Hardly কোন কাজ সংগঠিত হওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে নেতিবাচক অর্থে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Hardly has a negative meaning. It normally means ‘almost not at all’ or ‘only just’.

Example:

  • Shajid hardly comes here. (Hard নয়)
  • There are hardly any new features in this software.
  • Hardly anyone showed up for the meeting.
  • Hardly a day goes by when I don't think about you
  • This is hardly a new idea for a movie.
