Continuous vs Continual

Continuous /adjective/ (অবিচ্ছিন্ন / একটানা):

Continuous বলতে কোনোরকম বিরাম ছাড়াই কোনো কিছু সংগঠিত হওয়াকে বোঝায়।

The adjective continuous describes something that occurs over space or time without interruption.

Example:

  • To live, we need continuous supply of Oxygen. (Continual নয়)
  • The whole performance is enacted in one continuous movement.
  • But the airport is no longer inactive during the afternoons as there is continuous movement of flights.
  • A continuous series of blasts happened at Istanbul airport yesterday.
  • People want to come visit, but mostly I refuse them, preserving my continuous silence.

 

Continual /adjective/ (অবিরাম / বারংবার):

Continual বলতে মাঝে মাঝে বিরাম দিয়ে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে কোনোকিছু সংগঠিত  হওয়াকে বোঝায়।

Continual means forming a sequence in which the same action or event is repeated frequently.

Example:

  • All classes have been postponed as a result of the continual conflicts between two political groups. (Continuous নয়)
  • His plane went down after continual attacks.
  • The continual missile attacks, which are now coming closer, have opened larger fissures in the glass.
  • The Commonwealth forces, exhausted from continual air attack, pulled back.
  • Fearing a tsunami, she spent the night in her car at the top of a nearby hill, feeling continual aftershocks.
